Just an odd day and odd ads.

Western Railways strike, Roads are jammed, Vehicles are moving at snails pace and there is no rain although it is rainy season in Mumbai !
Whats more an advertiser can ask for !


The drama was all there yesterday (20th July 2012), as suddenly in 3.30 the western railway motormen goes on strike. So every people living on the western suburbs just went to the western express highways to get back to their home. And to every bodys expectation all the buses. taxis autos are jam packed. The traffic was moving at snails pace. every people reached hoe 3-6 hours late home. everybody was sufferer. But in this chaos (actually I am among them) I noticed one thing. I was in a jam packed bus in heavy traffic but to make the most of time we are listening music in our mobile and those having windows seat are observing the outdoor ads in the skyline of Mumbai and simultaneously discussing with co-passengers about them.




Films like The Dark Knight, Kya Supercool hain Hum was the clear winner with its catchy n hot image. Besides Britannia Biscuits and Bombay times- born Glamorous was the point of discussion among us and I m guessing a lot of people. But Channel V's Buddy Project is certainly dominating the Outdoor space in Mumbai. I am sure some of the people must have tune into Channel V yesterday. Similarly Picture abhi baaki hai is also there in the outdoor space.


Although we reached home after 11 pm it was a great experience.

Outdoor Ads Defacing Local train

More often than not we see Mumbai's Local trains other wise known as Lifeline of Mumbai is being defaced by advertisements pasted inside the trains. Co many Khan Baba, Bangali babas, Shah Babas are certainly defacing our interiors of the train. Others like educational courses are also illegally pasting their posters inside trains. similarly Inviting job application for marketing and sales job besides watchman and supervisor jobs deface the interior of trains. This is the case in all lines Central, western, Harbour line on Mumbai.

But the Rulebook shows a different image. Just have a look what the ad of Western railway say !!!


As per the advertisement Illegal advertisements and stickers attract nothing but the law.


But how many of them actually pay the fine and what is being done to curb this menace. this illegal ads not only defacing our beloved local trains but also the image of our infra is getiing a beating. although we have so many new trains running now. but these ads are taking the sheen out of these beautiful trains.
The image says it all ! everything else is perfect except the illegal advertisements in our trains.

End Of season Sale Outdoor Advertisement

This is the time of rain and simultaneously the season of Sale. due to stock piling a lot of big and small retailers go for end of season sale. Big retailers like Pantaloon, Big Bazaar, Shoppers Stop, Globus all announced their sale season.


So to get footfalls in their stall in addition to advertising in print and tv & online media they have started promoting heavily in Outdoor Media. Big hoardings at strategic places as well as hoardings near the store area are being given preference by the retailers.
In the image you can see an advertisement for Pantaloons Retail announcing their Sale with upto 50% off near the Dadar Tilak bridge. One more interesting fact is that in Sale Ads the discount percentage is the whole soul of the message and which is given the centerstage. But Globus has come up with a different strategy this time with the tagline Come Prepared with girls (models and they are beautiful) wearing boxing gloves and ready for a fight. practically in stores sometimes it is the case. For some good branded clothes people literally fight. their ad is Bang on that point. Have you seen any recent ads in this topic just let us know and we will include it in our blog.

Like Bus seats train handles are also a engaging media in outdoor category. it has high interaction time. But since there is space constraint you cannot convey a lot of message in this media. So if you just want to promote your brand you can take this as a media. 
Although it has high interaction time it has some of the disadvantages. Like mainly it is used in old trains (juna trains) which has no proper lighting which doesnot give you the actual strength of this media. and it is seen that a lot of time people remove the ad and insert their visiting card inside the handle. so if your agency can cater to these problems this can be a good media to promote your brand.

This is the Monsoon Time in India and more prominently in Mumbai. Outdoor space is going through a slack time as you have seen the blank outdoor hoardings throughout Mumbai. This is the trend in monsoon in Mumbai as well as other parts of the world. Recently we did had a look on the outdoor space in Mumbai and found most of the bill boards are lying vacant and this trend is expected to continue till end of August.
 
Similarly Bus Queue Shelter which is also a prominent outdoor advertising spot in Mumbai is also going through a lean period. about 30-40% are showing a deserted white look. But Yardley and Comedy Central have taken most of the BQS (Bus Stop)



But the study also reveals that  media and Film Industry is the leader in outdoor category. E.g. Bol Bachchan a film by Rohit Shetty starring Ajay Devgan and Abhishek Bachchan is dominating the outdoor space. ( See the outdoor ad) Similarly Comedy Central is also hugely promoting their Lost In Cleveland very aggressively in affluent areas of Mumbai.
